Reviewed in U.S. Naval Institute Proceedings
The Devil Dog Dictionary: An Unofficial Guide to Words and Expressions of the United States Marine Corps has been reviewed in the July 2026 issue of U.S. Naval Institute Proceedings, one of the military profession's most respected journals.
In his review, retired Marine Corps Colonel John C. McKay praises the book as "a unique and worthwhile book," noting that it captures the language, traditions and esprit de corps that have long distinguished the United States Marine Corps. He recommends it not only to Marines, but also to military professionals, historians and civilians seeking a deeper understanding of Marine Corps culture.
The review follows another notable distinction for the book: The Devil Dog Dictionary was added to the Commandant's Library, recognizing its value as a resource that helps preserve the history, heritage and language of the Corps for future generations.
More than a glossary, The Devil Dog Dictionary explores the words, expressions and traditions that have shaped Marines for nearly 250 years. Drawing on historical research, firsthand experience and the voices of Marines across generations, it offers readers an engaging look at the language that reflects the character, humor and fighting spirit of the Corps.
Whether you're a Marine, a veteran, a family member, a military history enthusiast or simply curious about the culture of the Corps, The Devil Dog Dictionary provides an authentic and accessible introduction to one of America's most storied military institutions.

OFFICIAL ENTRY INTO THE COMMANDANT'S LIBRARY
The Devil Dog Dictionary Officially Added
to the Commandant of the Marine Corps' Library
On Jan. 16, 2026, I received a letter from the Commandant of the Marine Corps thanking me for sending him a signed copy of The Devil Dog Dictionary — and informing me that the book has been formally added to the Commandant’s Library as Entry #1144.
As a former Intelligence Specialist, Marine Embassy Guard and lifelong student of our Corps’ history and language, this recognition means more to me than I can adequately put into words.
The Devil Dog Dictionary was created to preserve the language, traditions, and fighting spirit of Marines — from 1775 to today — and to ensure that our unique culture is never lost to time.
Semper Fidelis,
John Burke

This compact yet deeply rich guide completely exceeded my expectations. Drawing on his own service as a Marine Intelligence Specialist (1983-1989) and his dedication to preserving Marine Corps culture, Burke delivers a labor of love that is informative, respectful, and thoroughly engaging.
What makes this book stand out:
Accessible to everyone. Whether you’re a Marine old or new, a family member trying to decode what the “jarhead” is saying at the dinner table, or simply a curious history buff, this book delivers. It invites you into the barracks, the field, and beyond—with respect, clarity, and a touch of Marine grit.
Perfectly giftable. With its compact size and punchy content, it makes a great graduation gift for new Marines, a thoughtful present for veterans, or a clever coffee-table book for anyone intrigued by military culture.
Honors legacy. Burke clearly cares about the language, legacy, and esprit de corps of the USMC—this isn't just a humorous slang collection, it’s a tribute to something larger.
If you’ve ever found yourself scratching your head during a Marine conversation, wanting to dive deeper into what makes the Corps unique, or simply looking for an entertaining and meaningful read, this book is a home run. Highly recommended—five stars without hesitation.

I’m not a Marine myself, but I have one in my life — and this book helped me understand him (and his humor) so much better. It’s sharp, funny, and surprisingly heartfelt in how it captures the language and culture of the Corps. I even found myself adding a couple of “Marine words” to my own vocabulary, just to use playfully.
Whether you want to connect more deeply with the Marine in your life, or you’re just fascinated by military culture, The Devil Dog Dictionary is a must-have—and honestly, a perfect gift for any Marine you know.

Just received my copy from Amazon — awesome! From the Dark Green to the Light Green, from the Boot to the Old Salt — Gang Way, Leathernecks! If you're squared away, you'll agree this 'knowledge' is just as handy as your John Wayne and your KA-BAR. If the guys pulling butts are waving you Maggie’s Drawers — Devil Dog, don’t be a non-hacker! Lock and load on this one. Well done, John Burke — a must-have for every jarhead, and for anyone who wants to communicate clearly with one. Semper Fi!
