The Devil Dog Dictionary Added to the Commandant's Library

JUPITER, Fla., Jan. 15, 2026 — The Devil Dog Dictionary: An Unofficial Guide to Words and Expressions of the United States Marine Corps has been formally accepted into the Commandant's Library as Entry #1144, recognizing its contribution to documenting and preserving the language, traditions and culture of the United States Marine Corps.

Written by former Marine and communications professional John Burke, The Devil Dog Dictionary explores hundreds of Marine Corps words, phrases, acronyms and expressions collected from more than 250 years of Marine Corps history. More than a glossary, the book examines the language that has shaped generations of Marines and reflects the humor, camaraderie and esprit de corps that define the Corps.

Established to support professional military education and preserve works of lasting value to the Marine Corps, the Commandant's Library includes books that contribute to the understanding of Marine Corps history, leadership, culture and the profession of arms.

"I wrote The Devil Dog Dictionary to preserve a part of Marine Corps culture that is often passed from one generation to the next through shared experience rather than formal history," Burke said. "To have the book accepted into the Commandant's Library is an incredible honor and reinforces the importance of preserving the language that connects Marines across generations."

Burke served in the Marine Corps from 1983 to 1989, including assignments with 1st Battalion, 9th Marines; 1st Marine Regiment; Marine Security Guard detachments at the U.S. Embassies in Guatemala, Czechoslovakia and Finland; and Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 235 (VMFA-235) at Marine Corps Air Station Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii. Following his military service, he built a career in journalism and corporate communications before publishing The Devil Dog Dictionary in conjunction with the Marine Corps' 250th anniversary.
