The Devil Dog Dictionary Earns Praise
in U.S. Naval Institute Proceedings
I'm honored to share that The Devil Dog Dictionary has been featured in the July 2026 issue of U.S. Naval Institute Proceedings, one of the most respected publications serving the naval profession.
In his review, retired Marine Corps Colonel John C. McKay described the book as "a unique and worthwhile book" and wrote that it "adds nuance and understanding to what makes humans fight, and sometimes die, for a cause greater than themselves."
The recognition is especially meaningful because Col. McKay commanded 1st Battalion, 9th Marines during my service with the battalion in the 1980s.
Combined with the book's acceptance into the Commandant's Library as Entry #1144, this recognition reflects the book's mission: preserving the language, traditions and culture of the United States Marine Corps for future generations.

The Devil Dog Dictionary Officially Added
to the Commandant of the Marine Corps' Library
On Jan. 16, 2026, I received a letter from the Commandant of the Marine Corps thanking me for sending him a signed copy of The Devil Dog Dictionary — and informing me that the book has been formally added to the Commandant’s Library as Entry #1144.
As a former Intelligence Specialist, Marine Embassy Guard and lifelong student of our Corps’ history and language, this recognition means more to me than I can adequately put into words.
The Devil Dog Dictionary was created to preserve the language, traditions, and fighting spirit of Marines — from 1775 to today — and to ensure that our unique culture is never lost to time.

I’m not a Marine myself, but I have one in my life — and this book helped me understand him (and his humor) so much better. It’s sharp, funny, and surprisingly heartfelt in how it captures the language and culture of the Corps. I even found myself adding a couple of “Marine words” to my own vocabulary, just to use playfully.

If you're squared away, you'll agree this 'knowledge' is just as handy as your John Wayne and your KA-BAR.
